Does Virtual Dog Behavior Consulting Actually Work?

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably already typed some version of it into Google: can a dog trainer actually help my dog through a screen?

It’s a fair question. And if you’ve never done it, the idea sounds a little strange. There’s no trainer physically in your home, no hands-on demonstration. It’s easy to assume something must be missing.

So let me answer it plainly, from someone who has spent over 25 years doing this both ways: yes, virtual dog behavior consulting works — because it’s built on the exact same philosophy I’ve used in-home appointments for 25+ years. Here’s what that actually means.

My Philosophy Hasn’t Changed — The Format Has

I’ve never seen my job as training your dog. I’m not there to work with your dog directly and hand them back to you “fixed.” I’m there to train you to train your dog.

That’s true whether I’m in your living room or on a video call. Either way, I’m not the one who’s home at 6 a.m. when your dog barks at the mail truck, or in the room during the moment your dog stiffens over a food bowl. You are. My job — in person or virtual — is to get deep into what’s actually driving the behavior, and give you the tools and understanding to handle it yourself, consistently, every time it comes up.

The core of behavior work has always been the relationship between you and your dog. A dog needs to see you as their leader — calm, clear, and consistent — before real change happens. Helping build that leadership is my specialty, and it’s the same work whether we’re sitting across from each other or talking through a screen.

What a Virtual Session Looks Like

There’s no mystery to it, and it looks a lot like an in-home appointment. We dive deeply into your dog’s history and the specific behaviors you’re dealing with. I ask real questions, walk through what’s happening step by step, and coach you through exactly what to do — the same tools, the same depth, the same one-on-one coaching I’ve always given.

Over 25+ years and thousands of dogs, I’ve worked with just about every personality — anxious dogs, confident dogs, fearful dogs, dogs who’ve bitten someone — and just about every kind of owner, too. That experience is what shapes the plan. It doesn’t depend on me being physically present; it depends on me understanding your dog and coaching you well, which I can do just as thoroughly on a call.

The Honest Bottom Line

Virtual dog behavior consulting works for the same reason my in-home sessions always have: change happens through you. I’m not there to train your dog — I’m there to train you to lead your dog, with the tools and coaching to do it well. That work doesn’t change based on whether I’m in your home or on your screen. It changes based on experience, and that’s what 25+ years and thousands of dogs have given me.

If you’re not sure whether your situation is a good fit for virtual consulting, that’s exactly what a free behavior consult is for — no guessing required.
